compound sentences using a semicolon examples

can someone demonstrate a long complex sentence, and compound sentence? 10pts!?
i know what a regular complex and compound sentence looks like, but can you give me a college level example? could you please give me an example that a real person would use without sounding like a robot or in uneducated person? this is my problem i tend to have issues with run-ons.
Also im having problems knowing where to place my commas and semicolons
please give me better examples then;
a) Mary went out, and she had fun. ( thats a basic fifth grade level sentence example, could you give me an example suited for an adult:] )
or
b) Jane loves rick because he buys her flowers. (also an elementry example)
